August 2(.l die annual Student Activities and Services Fair was held in BelkDiniiig Hall. The west wing of Belk. which is typically known among uppcrclassmeu as the “Freshman" side, was packed with sta tions representing the diveree raugeof exiracunricular aaiviiies available to the class of 2001. 'Hie yearly event is sponsored by the Office of Studeoi Activities and is primarily offered to help freshmen be come involved in tlie wide viiriety of Meredith's academic clubs uiid stu dent-run organizations. This year, about 70 of tiiose were reprejenicd. However, Shelley Hoover, of the Officc of Student Activities said that the fair was a httle different this year. Hoover said that in years past, the fair was held during freshman oriental ion. Al! students were able to attend the Aaivitles Fair Freshman gst a chance to see the numerous extia-cuiTicular possibilities available at .Meredith, photo by April Bussells but that iliis year Student Activities wanted to include returning students as well and, therefore held the fair on the first day of classes. Witli a litde more time to recover from a lieciic oneutatiou schedule, tlie studem plan ning committee, headed by MeUssa Ray. was able to advertise widely and plau emertainment. Also, in an effort to raise aware ness about the various services pro vided by tlie college, there were repre sentatives from Gateway (as an exten sion of Technology Services), the Heultli Cemer. the Career Cemer, the Learning Center and Security present this year. Bui die fair still seemed to have the largest turnout from and impact on tiiosenew to Meredith.
